5. Can you tell us about the jobs/classes available to players in VSOH as well?

In addition to crafting and diplomacy classes, players can select from the following adventuring classes:

Defensive Fighters:
Dread Knight
Paladin
Warrior

Offensive Fighters:
Bard
Monk
Ranger
Rogue

Healers:
Blood Mage
Cleric
Disciple
Shaman

Arcane Casters:
Druid
Necromancer
Psionicist
Sorcerer

6. What modes of transportation will be featured in VSOH? Will there be any mounts?

Travel is a key aspect of Vanguard, and as a result there will be many forms of vehicles/mounts. Players will get their first horse relatively early on and from there a wide variety of both land and flying mounts will become available as well as ships and boats of varying size and power. The great thing is that these modes of travel are completely controlled by the player. You pilot your boat and go where you want to go, you fly on the back of your creature and see what you want to see – not on rails. There will be some transportation “on rails” such as a ferry type service that gets people from one continent to another but if it is your personal ship, you can pretty much go where you’d like. That’s pretty exciting.

7. Will the game feature instancing?

Not in the way that other MMOs have. We feel that instancing works against creating strong communities – the trick is just to provide enough content to support players without having to use instancing. We’re doing two things to help combat the negative things that make instancing so attractive. One is that we are creating truly massive dungeons so that multiple large groups of people can be in there fighting lots of different mobs at the same time. We also have kind of a form of instancing called Encounter Routes, but we don’t consider it traditional instancing because the experience still takes place where other people can see you. For example, once you’re in a dungeon, your group can be set on an Encounter Route, which is kind of like a linear quest that is locked to your group. Mobs that are linked to Encounter Routes only spawn for the group that is engaged in the event. Everyone else can still see you fighting and they can even help heal or buff you, but they can’t take your mob and they can’t loot it once it is dead.

The shared experience of playing with other people is what forms communities and friendships in MMOs. When someone comes along and saves your group after your cleric dies, that creates a friendship. It is important to us that people are able to play together. It’s a big challenge for sure to do that without traditional instancing, but we’re pretty happy with how its turning out.

8. Will there be any naval or sea-based adventures in VSOH?

As previously stated, travel will be a big part of Vanguard – and that includes sea travel. While full on naval combat will not be in right at launch, having a good boat will be a key factor in many adventures. We’ll have a variety of “coast huggers” so you can scout around the areas relatively close to shore, and others that are deep sea worthy to take you and your group or guild to experience adventure on a neighboring continent.
