Besides fixing problems they add free content. While Factions has to be paid for, before that they added new missions for the player to play for free in Prophecies. Also a slew of high level bosses were added, after being named by players in a contest. Things like this go to extend the life of the game and make me feel like purchase is justified. One of the main aspects of Guild Wars is guilds. Right now you are probably saying “No Duh”. The support of guilds runs through the whole game. Joining or creating a guild goes by account. So if you join a guild as one character, all your characters (in the PvE and PvP portions of the game) are in that guild. This is a double edged sword. If you want to try to start your own guild, or check out all the guild features, you can’t join another one even with a different character. Same goes if you already in a guild and would like to play another character in a friend’s guild maybe. This might sound like a bad deal; however, this keeps a lot of people from joining competing guilds as spies and so forth. It also makes so when you join a guild you are going “all in”. Why should you create a guild or be a part of a guild? The game focuses on team work, working together to achieve things. The most obvious reason to join one of course is for completing missions. Not that everyone isn’t a “noob” at some point or another, but there is nothing like playing for a hour in a mission and then having your whole team die because one guy runs ahead, or kills a creature that isn’t suppose to die and ruin the bonus. In short being in a guild will help you meet people and always have a list of people to call upon when you are trying to complete a mission. As far as features for guilds, the first one every guild gets is the cape. Players can choose to hide them for most of the game if they want (to show off their armor or if they don’t like the pink color their guild may have chosen). Then later on, and much more costly to the guild, are guild halls. These are places for guild mates to gather. Guild halls also open up guild battles. There are also other features which guild halls can get like NPCs, merchants and storage, you find in all the towns. With Factions there is also a NPC for Alliance Battles. Of course these are costly, and not exactly necessary, but if you guild has the extra gold they are a nice touch.Guild battles are an integral part to Guild Wars. If you go to the Guild Wars site you will notice they have a ladder system for guilds. As guilds win and lose, depending on the difficulty of the opponent, they will go up and down the ladder. If top teams decide to battle, their battles are visible to everyone in the game that wishes to watch one. One of the greatest features I have yet to mention but for most people is the main selling point is the monthly fee. There is none. While some people may argue Guild Wars doesn’t release as much content as other pay monthly games, it is something to note. Everyone has an on going life outside of the computer, and whether it is a job or school, you might not get time every month to play or get your money’s worth. If you don’t play for 2 months you can always come back and still have your character with everything still in place and not have any kind of fees you had to pay for those 2 months you were gone or busy. If you are wondering if you should pick this up, my suggestion is if this is your first Guild Wars title, then it is worth the money. If you already own Guild Wars Prophecies, you have to decide if it is worth it to you. You get 2 new classes, and 11 new missions, lots of new quests. If you never really finished the first game or haven’t touched it since you first picked it up, then honestly this game does add some great features, but it might not last you as long as the first one did since a majority of the game is more or less the same. If you loved the first one, and have played through it more than one time, or find yourself still playing it every week, the Factions is worth every cent to continue your adventures. |
