The Ryzom Ring Preview

I got the chance to sit down with Milko Berset, the director over at Nevrax, the company behind The Saga Of Ryzom MMORPG. He took me through all the ins and outs of the upcoming Ryzom Ring expansion. This add-on will allow players to literally build their own MMORPG adventures and share them with everyone.

We started off by logging in to the Ryzom Ring servers and opening a pre-made adventure that Milko had put together for demonstration purposes. The Ring servers are hosted by Nevrax, but the actual designing and edition is done on the user’s PC and then uploaded. First let’s talk about the scenario that Milko had prepared for me.

The scenario that Milko had prepared was a typical “save the princess” type affair. We began in a small encampment where the villagers were very worried about their missing royalty. The villagers tell our hero that the princess was kidnapped two days ago. With a bit of exploring we find out that she is likely being held at a bandit camp which is towards the north. When we reach the bandit camp, there we see our dear missing princess surrounded by three bandits. As we approach, two of the bandits attack, and one runs off to “rally the bandit cavalry” as it were. Once we kill the two bandits and escort the princess back to the village, the mission seems over. Unfortunately, the rest of the bandits do not see things that way, and attack the village in force. As the townsfolk begin to fight off the bandits, we tell the women to leave the village for protection. It seems all is going well until the women discover a strange brown mound in the desert to the south of the town. The mound, as it turns out, is a nesting place for some rather nasty monsters. The women must fight off the monsters with your help, and once that is done, the adventure, at long last, is over.

Now you may be saying to yourself that this sounds like a regular old run-of-the-mill RPG scenario, and normally, you would be correct. Here is the unique part: this was all created by Milko using the Ryzom Ring add-on, and is something any player with the time, energy, and desire can do. Think of Ryzom Ring as a FPS-style map editor for MMORPG games. The technical interface, as you will read about below, is fairly straightforward, and the application itself is one of the most powerful pieces of software I have ever come across.

The Ryzom Ring software is very similar to what designers of The Saga Of Ryzom use to create the game, and what they use to create new content for the game as well. As the creator, you can switch Dungeon Master mode on and off. The DM mode is used when you want to travel in your created world without being seen by enemies. Not only that, but in DM mode you can instantly transport anywhere on the map, or you can run there extremely fast. When your adventure is uploaded and becomes live, you can instantly kill players or NPCs, spawn or despawn enemies, create and destroy items, and pretty much anything else that the creator of any game could do. Also keep in mind, your uploaded scenario can be participated in by your friends, family, or random players. It is open to whomever you decide to let play.
