KartRider is the second free MMO brought to the US from Korea by the Nexon company. Maple Story is the first, which has turned out very well so far for Nexon. KartRider is the next free to play MMO from Nexon, and the game can be more or less described as a much cuter Mario Kart. The racing mechanics are very similar to the Nintendo kart classic, and now that the game is in MMO form, you can play from any PC, at any time.

Nexon is also exporting the free to play MMO business model from Korea. This means that the actual game is free to download, join, and play, for as long as you so desire. What does cost money is the add-ons and accessories. For instance, in Korea, if you want to buy stickers or designs to put on your Kart, you pay a few dollars with your credit card, and you can download and use them. This is how the game makes money for Nexon, and how many successful Korean MMO games are run. Now, Nexon has not opened the shop part of the game here in the US yet, but it will eventually be open for business, and the micro transactions can begin. Nexon also has deals in place with big companies like Coke to provide special upgrade parts and Coke-themed items for the player’s Karts, at least in Korea, but we fully expect them to pursue such arrangements here in the US. Now that you understand the Nexon free to play MMO business model, let’s talk about the game itself.

The game play of KartRider is very easy to pick up. If you can type on the keyboard, you can play the game. In order to learn the ins and outs of the game itself, there is even a small tutorial you can run thorough when you first sign up. I was not kidding before when I said, “think Mario Kart,” because that is exactly how the game plays.

There are several tracks to choose from, and they have assorted levels of difficulty. Each track is unique, and has its own obstacles and quirks to learn and overcome. Add to all of this real live opponents, and you may have a hard time coming in first, even if you used to win Mario Kart every time. You need not fear, though, because the game will try to match you with racers who possess about the same skill level as you. It varies a bit, of course, but generally, you will be grouped with new players, if you are new, and so on.
