In KartRider, as in any MMO, you progress by earning experience points. The experience you gain is used to obtain licenses in order to get into more advanced game lobbies, which in turn you use to gain more experience, and so on. During the open beta, which is going on right now, the rookie and novice lobbies are packed, of course. I am not sure at this point if the lobbies above novice are open yet, but they should be soon if not now.

If, by chance, you are not first to finish, you are giving a certain amount of time to cross the finish line, or you will get the dreaded DNF (did not finish). This means that the experience points that you attain finishing the track will be reduced, and that is not a good thing, as experience points are the main driving force in any MMO game, including and KartRider. You also receive money for finishing a race, and you can use this money to buy kart accessories and upgrades. So you can see, it behooves you to finish the race if you can.

Another thing that Nexon exported from Korea was the cutesy super-deformed look of the racers. The entire game is cel-shaded, and it works well. The karts and characters are cute little elf-like creatures, and they would be right at home as a magical assistant in any anime movie. IT really helps to bring in the non-MMO gamer sect by putting them at easy, females especially. According to the people at Nexon I spoke with, this is their ultimate goal – to bring into KartRider as many non-MMO gamers as possible, by making the game completely accessible.

Overall, the game’s interface, mechanics, and even the game concept itself really lends itself towards drawing in gamers, nay, people, who would not normally play an “MMO” game, or even use the phrase “MMORPG.” This is exactly what Nexon is shooting for, and it seems they have really got a handle on how to make it work. The game can be played on even the lowliest of PC’s, no super hardware needed. Even the least technically savvy out there can figure out how to download and install the game, and being free to play at all times, players never have to worry about overage charges or monthly bills. It is really the right way to appeal to the masses, and Nexon seems to have it down pat.
